FAKE: Carbon projects are a form of green land grabbing

Serious companies like Carbonext invest substantial human and material resources in land tenure due diligence to ensure that the landowners proposing carbon projects are in fact the rightful owners. Carbonext examines more than 50 official documents issued by public agencies such as notary offices, INCRA (National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform), IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), and state land and environmental authorities.

The company has rejected tens of millions of hectares proposed for carbon projects due to fragilities identified in the documentation. Cases of land grabbing involving carbon projects — such as those exposed by the Greenwashing Operation — were, according to Brazil’s Federal Police, the result of bribery of public officials, and can therefore only be uncovered by authorities.

That is why Carbonext, as a victim of such irregularities, welcomed the operation, and believes that government oversight is essential to the solidity and integrity of our market.
