“The alert area detected by DETER for the month reached 877 km², up 5% from 2020 and a record in the historical series. At COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, Brazil ignored the record levels of devastation and pledged to end illegal deforestation by 2028.” — By Mariana Garcia (G1)

Just two days after the environment minister stated at COP26 that “Brazil’s green future has already begun,” data revealed that the Legal Amazon recorded an area of 877 km² under deforestation alert — a 5% increase over 2020 and the highest ever for that month.

The figures were released by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) on Friday (November 12).
