"Beyond public policy, companies also have a key role in protecting the Amazon Rainforest." — Analysis by Janaína Dallan, Co-CEO of Carbonext, for Estadão
A swath of destruction currently threatens 100 million hectares of the Amazon. Around 10 million hectares are protected from deforestation thanks to the voluntary carbon market. During the Climate Summit, on Thursday the 22nd, President Jair Bolsonaro made two major announcements—but Brazil will need to change its approach and effectively deliver on its promises: to achieve net-zero by 2050 and eliminate illegal deforestation by 2030. These goals are— or should be—deeply intertwined, especially considering the record deforestation seen in March, according to PRODES data.
