High Integrity

Education, women's empowerment, and conservation as a foundation for building a sustainable future.

High Integrity at Carbonext

Integrity lies at the heart of every carbon credit generation project and is a central theme for the future of environmental preservation. That’s why we have developed processes that combine internal quality standards with best practices from the market to build integrity and reliability into our preservation and restoration projects.

Land and Reputational Due Diligence

A rigorous due diligence process investigates the ownership history of properties applying to host a project, tracing records back to the moment when the land was separated from federal ownership. In Brazil, most of the areas that apply for carbon credit generation projects are disqualified at this stage, based on official documentation.

Baseline Construction

Developing a credible baseline grounded in mathematical models and academic methodologies recognized by the scientific community is a core pillar of Carbonext projects. Our baselines rely on geospatial monitoring data coordinated by national and international institutions such as Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE), MapBiomas, NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), the US Geological Survey (USGS), among other sources.

We apply conservative criteria in our modeling to avoid any inflation in the projected baseline. These baselines are supported by biomass inventories that verify the amount of carbon stored in the areas and are validated in accordance with all auditing body requirements.

Certifications

We submit our projects to verified audits, the world’s leading carbon certification bodies, and the most reputable international rating agencies. All certifications and their respective processes are disclosed with full transparency.

Technology

Carbonext develops tools that integrate cutting-edge technology with the mission of biomass preservation and restoration, ensuring governance and transparency at every stage of the project.

Project Development

At Carbonext, we have developed an internal system that enables the visualization of geospatial data for each project area. It provides access to information such as project boundaries, reference regions, and local data including hydrography and statistics from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

We use consolidated geographic databases provided by government institutions such as INCRA, SIGEF, and protected area registries to facilitate detailed assessments and comprehensive understanding of each project area. Our system also allows us to track project development stages and to project both avoided deforestation and carbon emissions over time.

Remote Monitoring – CarbonEye

In partnership with the Google Accelerator for Startups, we developed CarbonEye, our proprietary remote monitoring system. It uses computer vision algorithms to process satellite imagery and detect threats to forest integrity. The system also integrates alert data from multiple sources, offering a completer and more precise overview of each project's condition.

On-the-Ground Monitoring

To complement satellite monitoring, we developed tools that are used by project stakeholders directly in the field. These collaborative patrols are essential for ensuring an accurate understanding of vast territories and for encouraging local engagement in daily monitoring efforts.

We created the Quick Capture app, which allows for easy data collection during patrols and is designed to be accessible even for users with limited digital literacy.

With our wildlife sighting app, we encourage community members to photograph animals and their tracks. This helps expand our species inventory and rebuild local residents’ connection with regional biodiversity.

We install camera traps throughout project areas and use artificial intelligence to process the captured images, identifying animal species and enhancing our biodiversity monitoring efforts.

Portal Carbonext

Credit Sales and Retirement

Through technological integration between our partners’ systems and our digital platforms, we ensure transparency throughout all project phases, from development to the retirement of carbon credits.

Our sales portal is directly connected to Verra, providing even greater security and transparency to buyers, who can trust that their credits are officially and reliably retired.

Collaboration on the Development of Market Best Practices

We take pride in contributing to discussions held by national and international bodies that reinforce the integrity of the voluntary carbon market.

As members of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market—an independent global governance body—we have participated in the development of the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs), a set of foundational guidelines for generating high-integrity carbon credits.

Frameworks like the CCPs help strengthen critical concepts such as additionality and permanence in carbon projects.
